As far as flexible displays are concerned, for the most part we’ve only seen it used in foldable phones. LG was supposed to debut a rollable display smartphone, but given that the company has pretty much given up on their mobile ambitions, it looks like maybe TCL could be picking up where LG left off.
At MWC 2022, the company showed off their fold and roll smartphone concept. This is a phone that sandwiches like a regular foldable phone where when it’s opened up, it sports a 7-inch display. However, at the press of a button, another display rolls out extending the size of the display to 8.8-inches.
This means that instead of a phone that unfolds to 8.8-inches immediately, the use of a rollable display gives TCL the opportunity to create a more compact phone that can be expanded if needed. It’s an extremely unique concept and we’re not sure if TCL has plans to ever launch the device, but it does open the possibility to future phones where it won’t have to choose to either use a foldable or rollable display.
Right now it feels more novel than practical, plus we’d hate to think how much such a phone could potentially cost given that it uses two types of flexible display technology, but what do you think? Is this something you might be interested in?
